I think we all agreed that Penny Goswell’s first ‘official’ function since taking the Chair in April was a resounding success.
The Floral Day began with members socialising over coffee and browsing the varied stalls that were selling everything from plants, natural beauty products, crafts, jewellery and of course, cake!
Chairman Penny formally opened the day and introduced our first speaker, Christine Haywood, who, with the aid of her sidekick, David North, gave us a highly entertaining hour of stories, poems, jokes and songs - all with a garden theme. Her audience participation segments went well with members singing along to tunes of bygone days - ‘Come into the Garden Maud’ being a favourite. Not to be outdone Christine’s husband Keith effected some convincing birdsong accompaniment on his ocarina, and later gave some interesting background information on their award-winning Cannes business which is masterminded from the couples Farnborough home.
There followed ample time for browsing and buying before lunch was served at 12.30pm.The bagged lunches proved very popular and all credit goes to Kate Robinson and Penny Goswell for three days of hard toil.
Day 1: Shopping.
Day 2: Preparing and packing the bags.
Day 3: getting up at silly o/clock to butter and fill 90 bread rolls!
Well done to you both - you did a grand job.
The afternoon session continued with a flower demonstration by our old friend Rev. Hayden Wilcox. Hayden, as always, entertained his audience with amusing anecdotes while arranging his foliage and flowers into two stunning floral displays that were later raffled off.
There followed a last opportunity to shop the stalls, collect raffle prizes, and check quiz results before Penny breathed a huge sigh of relief and closed the event, confident that all the planning and preparation had been worthwhile!
